Nightly Balloon Glows are a popular part of the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. Just before dusk, the balloons are tethered to the ground but inflated as if they are being prepared for flight. The balloonmeister and his crew will inflate the nylon ‘envelope’ with a giant fan and the propane burner. When the balloon fills to the point of lifting off the ground, the gondola is uprighted and ready for action. However, for evening glows, since the balloon is tethered to the ground there is no liftoff so as the balloonmeister periodically opens the burners, the blue fame fills the balloon with bright light–thus displaying all the colors in the balloon design in spectacular fashion!

Visitors can walk around the balloons in the park to admire the kaleidoscope of colors. At select times, all of the balloonmeisters will fire their balloons at the same time–thereby lighting up the entire park with colors and shapes. This tradition was started in 1979 and has become an integral part of the Fiesta. Balloon glow evenings close with a mesmerizing laser light show and fantastic fireworks display.
